Spotlight Artist: Tony Thomas

We are honored to feature nationally acclaimed pianist, organist, and keyboardist Tony Thomas, a true master of jazz improvisation based right here in Memphis.

​Tony’s musical journey began early, sparked by a childhood love for theatre organ and big band swing—including a memorable moment where he sat in with the Count Basie Orchestra’s rhythm section as a young boy. By age 15, he made history as the youngest soloist ever to perform a concert on the Senate Theatre’s grand Wurlitzer in Detroit. He later honed his craft formally, earning a Bachelor of Music Degree in Organ Performance from the University of Iowa.

​Drawing rich inspiration from jazz legends like Erroll Garner, Milt Buckner, George Shearing, and Bill Evans, Tony seamlessly bridges the grandeur of the theatre organ with the soulful grit of the Hammond B3. His extraordinary career spans thousands of commercial recordings and dynamic collaborations with iconic artists across genres, including Al Jarreau, David Sanborn, Hank Crawford, Richard “Groove” Holmes, U2, Joe Walsh, and opera star Kallen Esperian.

​A five-time N.A.R.A.S. Premier Player Award winner and an inductee into the Premier Player Hall of Fame, Tony continues to captivate audiences with his boundless creativity, rhythmic drive, and lifelong passion for music. Most recently, on August 8, 2026, he brought his incredible gift directly to our community with a special live performance at The Gardens of Germantown memory care, bringing immense joy and unforgettable melodies to our seniors!
